Food Pairing 101: What Goes Well With an Insane Not Birthday Cake?

An older, technology illiterate, lady went on Facebook yesterday and wished one of my current co-workers “happy birthday.” This led to a number of other people echoing the sentiment. Sweet gestures and all, only problem was that it wasn’t yet her birthday (it actually happens on Sunday). This would’ve just passed through the internet waves and been “one of those things” except a current co-worker saw these messages, thought she had forgotten about the birthday and bought her a cake. So there we were, enjoying a birthday cake on someone’s not birthday because somebody doesn’t know how to use Facebook. I guess the moral, if there is one, is to scrutinize Facebook posters. Really look at their profile pictures. Decide if they are reliable sources of information. Then, buy a cake anyways. What does it hurt? There is never a wrong time to celebrate. I know I needed some cake after arriving late (due to the shifter cables in my car going out).

While the version we ate was a Triple Chocolate One, I came across a recipe for a Vegan Strawberry Tall Cake (not the one pictured above, that is just some generic strawberry cake I found through creative commons). Dallas’ cake is the first one on my list, but this one slides in to second. I need to find a day that is somebody’s not birthday to make it.

Pair these “insane” cakes with Technicolor Teeth. These guys do a brand of psych-shoegaze noise rock that has certain qualities of Waaves and Japandroids. Here is the single “Station Wagon”:

  • Haha, that is so funny, but gorgeous looking cake. Maybe I could start a rumour it is my birthday and see what happens :)

    • if it gets you one of those cakes i’ve seen on your blog then it would be a win.

  • I wish people would buy me cake for my un-birthday too! :)

    • just tell them when it is…
