3x Platinum Big Boy Put Into Your Mouth by Macklemore & Lewis, The Amends and The Sweet Serenades
Back in the spring of 2009 I was tearing up the carpet at a house party with my dance moves when T.I.’s “Whatever You Like” came on the late night radio. It was the first time I heard the volatile rapper drop the line “let me put this big boy in yo life.” My immediate thought was dick…as in he’s talking about his dick. Years later I came across this recipe and I realized I had been mistaken. T.I. wasn’t talking about his dick, that would’ve been too obvious, he was talking about those burgers that moonlight as meatloaf and get baked on a long bun. I was so impressed that he had fooled me for so long, that I immediately tweeted him to offer my congratulations. I never received a reply. No matter. He’s a busy man.
Since “Whatever You Like” found such great success on the charts and has been certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, I figured a bit of a tribute was instore. I give you the vegan, 3x Platinum Big Boy:
3x Platinum Big Boy (inspired by T.I. and Sunshine and Bones Blog)
(printable version)
-8 vegan meatballs (minus the tomato sauce)
-1/4 cup cornflakes, crushed
-1/8 cups soy milk
-2 Tbs. ketchup, separated
-1 tsp. Vegan Worcestershire Sauce
-1 tsp. minced thyme
-1/2 tsp. garlic powder
-salt and pepper
-long buns
1. Make the vegan meatballs according to directions.
2. Bake the rolls, cut side up, on a wire rack inside a rimmed baking sheet until golden, about 5 minutes.
3. Crush the meatballs in a metal bowl. Add the cornflakes, soy milk, one tablespoon of ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, garlic powder and salt and pepper and stir until everything is well combined.
4. Spread the meatball mixture on top of the rolls, taking it all the way to the edge. Brush the top of the meat with remaining ketchup (I also brushed some of them with banana barbecue sauce…balls to the walls baby!). Bake for 5-10 minutes. Top with red onion and tomato. Put that big boy in your mouth.
While not on par with T.I., yet, Macklemore & Lewis continue to put out great tracks in preparation for their debut album coming out in October. The latest is the jazzy “Thrift Shop” which mentions all the things you can purchase at…a thrift shop. The best line is probably the one about R.Kelly’s sheets smelling like piss. Check it out (and the video) below:

Another band we’ve seen quite a bit of on write.click.cook.listen (though not as much as Macklemore & Lewis) is Colorado rockers the Amends. The band is prepping for the release of their second full-length in September and to tide their fans over they offered their first covers ever. Covers because the band combined two of their favorite songs “Heroin” by the Velvet Underground and “Heroes” by Davide Bowie into one track. They dubbed it “Heroine.” You can get the song for free by tweeting or posting about it on Facebook, otherwise you will be able to purchase it for one dollar starting next week via the band’s bandcamp page.
On September 12th, The Sweet Serenades will be sending their catchy shout backs to the record store with their new album Help Me. One of the tracks on that album is “Can’t Get Enough” which sounds like someone threw AC/DC, ABBA and Issac Hayes (along with some greens) into a blender for a sexy, slightly vulgar, beaty breakfast treat. Dude’s got some series lows on the pipes.
And the namesake:
