North Carolina Pulled Pork Barbeque with Mind the Gap, The Enemy and i, said the sparrow

A few weeks back I talked about my struggle to track down the elusive jack fruit. When I finally did find it I figured I had two choices: go big or go home. Well I went big. I loaded up a cart, filled it with dozens of cans of jack fruit and watched the cashier’s eyes as he ran it over the scanner. I filled the trunk of my car and…well technically at this point I went home. I guess I actually did a little bit of both going big and going home.

My first foray, the Asian jack fruit sandwiches, were such a delight that I couldn’t wait for my next go round. I decided that my second jack fruit experiment would be an ode to something a little closer to home. A tried and true North Carolina version of pulled pork loaded with tons and tons of Cole Slaw and washed down by Cheerwine. It is the kind of stuff that tobacco road thrives on (minus the slaughtered pigs and milked cows).

North Carolina Pulled Pork Barbeque
(printable version)

-2 cans of jack fruit, drained
-1 can of Dr. Pepper
-1 Tbs. hickory smoke
-1 tsp. garlic powder
-1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes
-1/2 tsp. paprika
-1 tsp. black pepper
-1 tsp. mustard powder
-2 tsp. brown sugar
-bottle of favorite barbeque sauce
-Vegan Cole Slaw
-Ciabatta rolls

1. Mix the spices together and rub all over the jack fruit. Place in a crock pot and turn on low heat.

2. Add the Dr. Pepper and liquid smoke around the edge and cook for 50 minutes (or until the jack fruit pulls apart at the touch).

3. Remove the jack fruit from the crock pot and drain the liquid. Place the jack fruit back in the crock pot and add the barbeque sauce. Cook for an additional 30 minutes. Roughly fork apart the jack fruit and place on Ciabatta bread. Top with Vegan Cole Slaw. Turn on the NASCAR race and eat like a barbarian.

NASCAR races, especially Talladaga, are all about finding the right dance partner. Those of you familiar with this blog know that my dancing partner, Dance (whom I’ve nicknamed the fifth horseman) has been MIA since the beginning. For a few brief moments this week he returned to tease only to disappear again. His form? Mind the Gap’s “Find My Way.” “Find My Way” is a funky, clicky, dance number. It is what happens when a 70′s style porn soundtrack forgets to wear a condom while making love to upbeat pop music. Or it is what happens when a Sri Lankan, Korean, Mexican and Jew from Cleveland decide to make dance music. Either way, it is unforgettable (and just in time for SXSW).

The Enemy makes heavy, anthemic music more prone to crowd surfing than dancing. No matter because it is every bit as catchy (just in a much different way). The band is preparing for a new album in the spring, Streets in the Sky, and have released their first single “Gimme the Sign” to whet your appetite.

Taking cyber stalking to a new level is i, said the sparrow’s “I’m a Villain and I’m Online.” There are lyrics about modems, keyboards and systems brought forth in a loud, boisterous and energetic ways. As great as the track is, I can’t even imagine how it explodes minds when performed live.
