Oy Vey, Moonmen on the Moon, Man and Valentinian Victoria Sponge Cake with Lemon Curd and Sour Cherries
After a second, third and fourth batch of my Lemon Curd and Sour Cherry Bars I still had some lemon curd and cherries wasting away in the refrigerator. I figured it would just stay there until the day (yesterday) when all I had in the house to eat was gluten and I was so desperate for something, anything else that I’d grab the nearly moldy curd and shriveled cherries and shove them into my mouth. But Jacqueline made the waiting unnecessary when she posted this. Ahh, lemon curd and cherries squeezed between puffy cakes that Queen Victoria supposedly enjoyed. Now that was a vision I immediately had to make happen (and by immediately I mean I didn’t even have enough time to listen to the whole Jehovah Witness spiel at the door so I invited them in to finish while I began baking. I think I wound up buying some girl scout cookies from them).
Victoria Sponge Cake with Lemon Curd and Cherries (adapted from Tinned Tomatoes)
(printable version)
-1/2 cup butter
-1/2 cup flour
-1/2 cup sugar
-2 eggs
-1/4 cup milk (I used skim but fatten it up if you want)
-1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
-homemade lemon curd
-canned sour cherries
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Rub some oil on three miniature pie pans.
2. Cream the butter and sugar together. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.
3. Add the flour in small increments. Fold with a spoon, using a cutting motion, until all the flour has been mixed in. Add the vanilla extract. Mix.
4. Divide the mixture into the three pie pans. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes (or until a skewer comes out clean).
5. Remove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool. Meanwhile make the lemon curd. Layer it on the first cake and place the second cake on top. Add another layer of curd. Place the final cake on top. Cover with more lemon curd and cherries. Slice and eat like a queen.
Jesus, if you haven’t heard of Oy Vey (here) and their album Recession Girls (which drops on V-Day), you haven’t been paying attention. This New York duo, led by Kevin Corcoran, blend electronic accents with solid rock instincts and pop melodies to create a swagger worthy of MGMT and Fleetwood Mac (at the same time!). “When I was Young” is another track dealing with relationships in the age of economic downturn. I think the song steps up and takes ownership of the moment where love turns to insanity, something that can’t be said for Brandon Flowers and his blame game.
When I woke up this morning I was laughing about the plan I was about to unveil. Imagine this, I am going to come up with a band name so wrong in every sense of the word. First I was going to put a comma in it so MP3 players hate the shit out of it. Second I was going to make it almost palindromic. Third I would make it five words long. I had it….Moonmen on the Moon, Man. I went to register the name on the web and sadly realized it was taken. The worst part is the band that took it knows how to drill an indie rock song. I dare you to not like “Oh Look, A Sweat Balloon Artist.” This track is via Brooklyn Vegan.
