Fiending for Blueberry Baked Oatmeal, San Cisco, PacificUV and My Best Fiend
My last night in Pennsylvania featured a long evening of conversation between my mother and I. She told me stories of the past (J-Fur loves the one about how I held all my energy in at school so that when I got home I just exploded) and family history that I had never heard before. We also talked a lot about food and cooking. She told me about meeting one of her former co-workers for breakfast once a month and enjoying a dish called baked oatmeal.
I questioned her about this Pennsylvania Amish style dish that I had never heard about before. According to her, the dish is like oatmeal only it is baked and holds together more like a casserole. This makes sense because, as far as I can tell, the Amish are all about morning casseroles. I jotted baked oatmeal down as something I needed to try when I returned to Florida.
Last weekend I did it. The baked oatmeal was great because I could just cut a slice in the morning on my way out the door and eat it as I walked to the car. I only dropped blueberries on my pants one day (thankfully it matched the blood on my shirt so we were all good). My first bite of the dish was overly sweet (for me and my sensitive sweet tooth) so I would probably cut the agave nectar down a little although over the next few days I didn’t notice it as much.
Blueberry Baked Oatmeal
(printable version)
-2 cups blueberries
-juice of 1/2 a lemon
-1 cup milk (or soy milk)
-1/3 cup agave nectar
-2 large eggs (or egg replacer)
-1 tsp. vanilla
-3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
-2 cups rolled oats
-1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
-1/2 tsp. salt
-4 Tbsp. brown sugar
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour 1/4 cup applesauce into the bottom of a square baking dish. Combine the blueberries, lemon juice and half of the brown sugar. Add to the applesauce and stir. Set aside.
2. In a medium bowl mix the soy milk, agave, eggs, remaining applesauce and vanilla. Set aside.
3. In another bowl mix the oats, baking powders and salt. Pour the wet into the dry and mix well.
4. Pour the oatmeal mixture onto the blueberries. Smooth the top. Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar on top.
5. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until browned on top. Allow to cool. Give it the fast food treatment.
About a month ago I voted for Triple J’s hottest 100 songs of 2011. One of my choices was “Awkward” by San Cisco (also featured here). Last week I had the chance to listen to San Cisco’s new EP (also called Awkward) in its entirety. I think I can officially say that my vote was wasted. “Awkward” isn’t my favorite track on the new EP. The oh la la-ing of “Rocket Ship” and the gibbering of “Lover” are even more impressive than their predecessor. Here’s a video featuring the song “Rocket Ship.” Awkward is out on February 7th via Island City.
PacificUV’s new album WEEKENDS will find its way onto shelves later this month. The album features guest appearances by members of the Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal who have assisted in creating something that buzzes through a number of myriad of backdrops and musical landscapes. On one track you can get an oozing vocoder rendition (“Ballerina”) that sounds a lot like something Black Moth Super Rainbow would write off on their taxes and the next brings you Magnetic Fields style electro pop (“Funny Girl”). It took some getting used to. I thought “Ballerina” was trash the first time I heard it. But as it kept coming up on my player my stance softened. Now I actually like it.
My Best Fiend is a Werner Herzog documentary film about actor Klaus Kinski. It is also the name of a Brooklyn band that is prepping for the release of their debut LP, In Ghostlike Fading, on Warp Records. One is a bluesy song that precariously toes the line between unsettling and uplifting. The other is a memoir of a mad yet talented actor. At this moment, only one matters.
