The Airplane Boys, Horrible Crowes and Duchesse Potatoes

Thanksgiving not only means lots of food at the dinner table but a gazillion pounds of leftovers too. For us, most of those pounds came courtesy of mashed potatoes. Unless we wanted to eat mashed potatoes for the next two years, I needed something to lower the supply a little. I wasn’t feeling particularly gnocchish so that was ruled out. My answer appeared, golden and browned, in the newest Vegetarian Times. Duchesse Potatoes are basically mashed potatoes mixed with a binding agent (eggs), cheese (I used mozzarella) and buttered paprika and then baked in the oven for 20 minutes or so. The result is a crispy exterior and a creamy interior. The Vegetarian Times version was piped through a pastry bag giving it an extra impressive look. I just scooped mine with an ice cream scooper and tried, unsuccessfully, to shape them with a spoon. Guess what? It didn’t matter because they still tasted good.
The Airplane Boys are a hip-hop duo that fuses elements of electronic and pop to create what has been called “a cutting edge movement for the urban culture.” They’ve been making their rounds for a while, but just recently came my way. Words can’t really do justice to what these two musicians bring to the table. Check out “Escape” from their album Where’ve You Been, then go get the whole thing for free.

Also proving that sometimes burying my head in the sand can cause me to miss interesting music is the Horrible Crowes “Behold the Hurricane.” The Horrible Crowes is the side project of Brian Fallon (lead singer for Gaslight Anthem). He is joined in the band by British musician Ian Perkins. Together these two craft slow burning introspective indie rock. Elsie, the band’s debut album, is out now on SideOneDummy.
