Food Pairing 101: What Goes well with Culture in Memoriam’s New Album?
Victor Hakansson is no stranger to music. He has been making it since he was a five-year-old tambourine wielding show kid for a traveling theatrical company. As he grew up and faced the wraith of greasers and neo-nazis, Victor resorted to a life of fighting and fear. He was alone. Victor eventually realized that if he wanted to survive, the fighting and fear had to go. He replaced it with the only other form of self expression he had ever known, music. Fast forwarding to the present day Victor, who heads Swedish music collective The Culture in Memoriam, is preparing for the release of his third album Rest In Pieces.
Rest in Pieces is a musical experience that mirrors Victor’s life. There are those moments of beauty and innocence, the five year old standing on a stage with his friends and family around him. There is the anger and fear of the teenager running and fighting for his life. There is the vulnerability and politics of an adult trying to navigate their way through today. All of this is played out over a bed of kettle-drums, string arrangements and distorted vocals. In essence, Rest in Pieces is the vocals of Tripping Daisy and David Bowie, the music of the Beach Boys and the call to arms of any good political punk band. I don’t think you can go wrong with that.
The strongest tracks on this album are “Death of Jimmy” and “Crafoord the Clown.” The multitude of musical elements present in these two tracks pairs particularly well with a dish of the same nature. Something like Korean Style Corn Pancakes from the Healthy Foodie. This recipe brings the heat of a chili, a sweet crunchiness of corn, the doughy texture of a pancake and an onion’s zing. All of these elements are then dipped into a salty sour garlic infused pool of punch. Put it together and you’ve got the perfect November afternoon.
Rest in Pieces will be released on November 16th.

I kinda missed the connection between the music and the pancakes, but if you say there is one, there is one. Case closed. Have a great weekend. Blessings…Mary
