Fireball Grinder Spreading Through Eight Bit Tiger and The Volcano
I wasn’t looking for love the other night when I walked into a local wood- fired pizza place to meet some friends before heading off to Howl-O-Scream but I found it anyway. The way that waitress looked at me and mouthed the words “Dante’s Inferno” before giving me one of those seducing eye winks I knew I had fallen head over heels. Of course, Dante and I couldn’t be lovers without a minor change. Dante was sporting a meatball. That wouldn’t do. But after just a tiny makeover we were ready.
Dante was spicy, made of a combination of San Marzano tomatoes and Siracha. I meant to bring Dante home but things got out of hand too quickly and it was all gone before I knew it. No worries, I would recreate Dante like the mad kitchen scientist I strive to be and have it with me for eternity.
Fireball Grinder (inspired by Wood Fired Pizza’s Dante’s Inferno Pie)
(printable version)
-1 onion
-olive oil
-5 cloves of garlic
-28 ounces San Marzano Tomatoes
-1 tsp. oregano
-1 tsp. basil
-salt and pepper
-siracha (I used 1/4 a cup)
-vegetarian meatballs
-sheep’s cheese
-sub rolls
1. Heat olive oil in a sauce pan over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized (about ten minutes). Add the garlic and cook an additional 1 minute.
2. Process the San Marzano tomatoes in a food processor until smooth. Add to the garlic and onions, along with the oregano, basil, salt and pepper and siracha. Reduce heat to low and simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally.
3. Make the meatballs according to directions.
4. Pour half of the sauce over the meatballs and bake for one hour.Remove, leaving the stove at the same temperature.
5. Place the meatballs in sub rolls and top with sheep’s cheese. Put the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake until cheese begins to brown. Top with additional fire sauce. Spread the fire to your mouth.
Eight Bit Tiger’s “Numbers” has been festering in my inbox for almost three weeks. As I put together this sandwich I knew it was finally time to quell the burning before my inbox was completely destroyed. Eight Bit Tiger is an electronic dance outfit from Chicago that features two brothers, Erik and Kent Widman (of Love in October fame). Their songs fuse together synth-pop of the 80′s, funk of the 70′s and Peter, Bjorn and John like pop intellectualism over a dance backdrop. “Numbers” is full of gluey loops, fist pumping drums and a lyrical styling that reminds me a little of Bloc Party. The band will be celebrating the release of their new album on November 4th at Schubas.
What gets hotter than a volcano (a highway to hell as I like to call it)? That’s why Dante’s Inferno sauce and the Volcano, from Gothenburg, Sweden. are made for each other. This punk rock trio consisting of Matty, Betty and Lizzy Volcano have a new EP which runs the gamut of punk rock stylings. At different points it has speed, sing-along choruses, off timing, poppiness, power chords, insulting lyrics and annoying vocals. It is all the glory that punk rock embodies. While the EP isn’t an immediate classic, it shows that the band has a good foundation and with continued work great things could be ahead. I thank Swedesplease for my introduction. My favorite track, “NinetyNine”:

Alright, you’re inspiring me to try new things here in Belize – I want a veggie-meatball sandwich now! I’ll use a local veggie-burger to create the meatballs, and the rest will have to be Belizean-style…
Exciting!!
